Unfortunately, there is almost nothing left to see of it, but at one time you could not get around it. At the Hoogstraat (when leaving Sluis towards Cadzand) there once stood a large castle. Construction started around 1386. The castle was mainly intended to monitor and, if necessary, hinder trade between Bruges and England.
The castle, with no fewer than 16 towers, 2 gatehouses and 36 rooms, was enormous! It had the shape of a rectangle, with long sides of approximately 86 x 80 metres. The walls were 15 metres high and almost 4 metres thick. Passages ran through the walls, connecting the towers to one another.
In the early 15th century, Jan van Bourgondië had a small castle built opposite the large castle, known as the "Tower of Burgundy". A wooden piling structure was built on both banks, with a chain between them that could be stretched taut across the water. In this way, the Zwin could be closed off to shipping.
During a bombardment in 1794, the castle was severely damaged. It was decided to demolish the building. Remains of the foundations are probably still present in the ground.
