High up in the Belfry stands a wooden figure, named “Jantje van Sluis”. This little man in 17th-century attire strikes the time on the bells with his hammer.
Jantje is ‘the’ hero of Sluis! Let's go back to the year 1606. At that time, Sluis was a mighty fortress. A strong Dutch garrison was stationed there. The Spaniards wanted to recapture the area by every possible means. They had agreed to launch their attack when the Belfry struck a certain hour. People waited and waited... hours went by and still no bell had struck. What was going on? That day there was a fair in Sluis and Jantje could not resist the temptation. He descended the spiral staircases of the Belfry, mingled with the festive crowds and looked too deeply into his glass. After that, he was no longer able to ring the bells... a blessing in disguise!

Did you know that Sluis has a town crier ? The town crier wears the costume of the little bell man and is therefore also called “Jantje van Sluis”.
In the past, when newspapers did not yet exist, a town crier would announce the news in the city. He informed the residents of announcements from the city council and of offers from local entrepreneurs. Nowadays, the voice of the town crier is mainly heard at events, ceremonies and competitions.
