City gates of Sluis.

The city walls of Sluis are a picture in every season and a beautiful stretch to walk or cycle. The connoisseurs among us know that you then come across the old city gates. A piece of rich history of Sluis! We would like to tell you more about it:

The Waterpoort was built in 1422. From the founding of Sluis until 1572, water entered the city through this gate.

The Zuidpoort is the old entrance gate from Sluis to Aardenburg. To the right of the entrance of the gate still stands the old gatekeeper's house, which was inhabited until 1928.

The Zuidpoort was constructed from 1399 to 1406.

The Oostpoort was built between 1424 and 1432. This was once the most beautiful city gate of Sluis. What remains of it now is but a shadow of what it once was. The Oostpoort had four large towers. Access to the city was possible via two drawbridges.

"De Steenen Beer", also called Westpoort or Brugse Poort. It is a ruin of the original gate. The old Westpoort was destroyed in 1437 by the inhabitants of Bruges (hence the name Brugse Poort).
