A piece of history of Sluis.
Sluis originated on the Zwin, one of the busiest sea arms in Europe. The Zwin connected the metropolis of Bruges with the sea. When the Zwin slowly silted up, ships were unloaded in Sluis and the town grew into an important trading center. Sluis is still a trading center, but now as a cozy shopping center that is open 7 days a week.
In the 14th century, Sluis was fortified with walls, gates, ramparts and watchtowers.
Tip: You can take a beautiful walk over the city walls (approx. 5 km) passing by various sights of Sluis, such as: The 4 old city gates, Molen de Brak, Statue of J.H. van Dale, historic Damse Vaart.
